Friday August 7

  • Fun way to start the weekend: a free flamenco jazz concert on a historic tanker! Check out Pow! Portside Open Weekend's kickoff event.

Saturday August 8

Sunday August 9

  • Keep it cool in the darkroom with our Analog Film Lab class, where you will learn how to shoot, process, develop, and print film. It's a great class that covers all the bases of analog photography.
  • We will have our new PortraBox selfie station set up at Coney Island again this Sunday. If you haven't seen or heard about it yet, check out these awesome photos!

Tuesday August 11

  • Love camp? Love the subway? The New York Transit Museum is hosting a special camp-themed evening event. Get your dose of mid-week nostalgia.

SUMMER TO-DO LIST: JULY 17-JULY 23, 2015

Summer should be fun, so we're rounding up our fave photo-friendly events every Friday this summer in our weekly TO-DO LIST

Friday July 17

  • Right by our location in Dumbo, there will be an evening of play called Come Out & Play After Dark. Let your inner child out and celebrate the start of another great weekend.
  • More interested in art? Attend the opening reception of Luminary, a special art show that centers around light as a medium.

Saturday July 18

  • Spend the day learning film photography with our Analog Film Lab class
  • After working hard in the darkroom, why not Party in Central Park? Sounds good to us. Go to Freedom for a fun night of dancing and music.

Sunday July 19

  • Enjoy the final day of the Prospect Heights Music & Art Festival. It started on the 15th, so you can go throughout the weekend as well!
  • A very important happening: a dog party! Go to BarkFest: the world's biggest puppy partay. Can you imagine the photo ops?

Monday July 20

  • Start off the week with some practical learning. Take our Photoshop for Photographers class to get a leg up on the ins and outs of this editing software.

Tuesday July 21

  • Celebrate Brooklyn, and celebrate your favorite 2000s rock band, Interpol, with this benefit concert.

Wednesday July 22

  • If you had fun on Tuesday, do it again with a back-to-back benefit concert for Celebrate Brooklyn, but this time with Modest Mouse. Keep it musical!

SUMMER TO-DO LIST: JULY 4-JULY 8, 2015

Saturday July 4

  • It's the 4th of July, and you know what that means: fireworks! Macy's is putting on the show from the East River again this year, so find a great spot and celebrate the holiday with friends and family!

Sunday July 5

  • Need to zen out after a festive evening the night before? Take a free yoga class at Prospect Park. They'll continue each Sunday of July.
  • Seinfeld is buzzing again with the release of all episodes on HULU, and the Brooklyn Cyclones are feeling the spirit. They'll host a second annual Seinfeld-themed evening with Salute to Seinfeld II: Bigger, Better & Bania, an evening full of baseball and laughs.  
  • More in the mood for theatre? Travel to Harlem in order to travel to Hispaniola, the setting for the Classical Theatre of Harlem's rendition of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The characters' longing for freedom takes on a whole new dimension by setting the play in Haiti.  

Monday July 6

  • Love dance?  You'll love MOMIX's new show at the Joyce Theater.  Alchemia is a beautiful blend of lights, dancing, music, and props.  It will dazzle your senses.

Tuesday July 7

  • The film Tangerine is getting a lot of buzz and not just because it was shot entirely on an iPhone 5S; it's also a thrilling modern narrative. It comes out on the 10th, but you can catch a rooftop preview at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Wednesday July 8

  • Beer fans will hop to the Craft Beer Jam this evening to see what the different boroughs have to offer.  
  • Bring your processed black-and-white film to our Darkroom Basics class to get a hands-on lesson on enlarging and printing!

SUMMER TO-DO LIST: June 27-July 2, 2015

Saturday June 27

  • There's no party like an art party, and you have a couple of options this Saturday. First, warm up at MoMA PS1's first Warm Up music series, a dance party at the great Queens art space.
  • There will also be a fun time to be had at the Gowanus Darkroom, where our very own Justin Lin will be serving up jams while you buy prints and explore the space. 
  • Another totally unique and quintessentially Brooklyn option is to create your own water tower! The Brooklyn Historical Society has put together this fun, late afternoon drink-and-art event.

Sunday June 28

  • Fresh after the announcement of national marriage equality, Pride in NYC will be bigger and more exciting than ever. Sunday's parade will be the place to be. Find yourself a spot to watch and cheer and bring a camera because there will be unlimited photo ops. Commemorate this event on film, and then take our Crash Course: Darkroom Basics class to see all of the photos you captured.

  • Looking to add a whole new layer to your photography approach? Getting into the studio might be the thing you need. Learn all about lighting indoors for professional portraits and product shoots with our Field Guide IV: The Studio class.

Friday June 19

Saturday June 20

  • Also at Coney Island this Saturday, the famous annual Mermaid Parade will be raging. If you like costumes, floats, and spectacle in general, this is your event.  Bring, like, 5 cameras with you.
  • If you're looking to cool off and/or work up a sweat, dance late into the night to synth pop in Williamsburg at Synthesizers in the Rain.
  • This weekend in Gowanus, there will be a night of theatre and dance with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Until Sunday June 21.
  • If you're musically minded, the NY Philharmonic is offering a free Concerts in the Parks series that just started, and you can catch the remaining shows until it ends on Wednesday.
  • All cinephiles have a cause to celebrate with BAM's Cinema Fest, offering an impressive lineup of independent film screenings.  Until Sat. June 28th

Tuesday June 23

  • This Tuesday, Brooklyn Central and the Bushwick Community Darkroom have joined forces to offer a Darkroom Basics Crash Course. Come learn with us how to make prints from a developed roll of film through the darkroom process!

Friday June 26

  • Next Friday, The BlowUp NYC continues its photography talk series.  The theme is Subculture photography; ten photographers discuss their favorite "subculture" image.
