Crash Course: Urban Landscapes

With NATHAN BETT

Who should take this class

New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, particularly when it comes to great photography.  Classic street shooters like Robert Frank, Reinhart Wolf and William Klein loved to train their lens on Liberty City’s rolling architecture, its vitality and grit.  To capture and document this city is to become part of New York’s rich narrative preserved and remembered for generations.  This live shooting workshop is a window into this inspired way of looking at the city, and is available to students of all experience levels.

What you will learn

First we’ll examine some work by a few noteworthy photographers of the Urban Landscape, and discuss how they sought and achieved their iconic imagery.  Then we’ll hit the streets, focusing on dynamic framing and composition, analyzing lighting conditions, assessing color and contrast, and exploring the area for arresting scenes to photograph.  At the end we’ll discuss ways to develop our ideas and take our photos further.
