So many of you probably know that we're associated strongly with the Rabbithole art space and the artists and organizations operating out of there. Justin, the founder of BKC, is actually one of the earliest artist collaborators with Rabbithole, and we support each others endeavors (like a real art community!). Rabbithole has been an instrumental institution for the potential of art in all its forms, particularly in the neighborhood of Dumbo, with tons of openings, performances, screenings, installations, yoga... clearly adopting an anything-goes attitude throughout the years.
What many don't know is that Rabbithole has been allowed to thrive without being driven by profit because of its long-time guarantor, founder Shawn Lyons' primary business Rabbit Movers. As such, when money was tight, this team of artist movers carried the load for the sake of the existing community.
Unfortunately, Rabbithole is now in a perilous place. Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, Rabbit Movers had all its trucks wiped out from flooding on the banks of the Gowanus Canal (they park their trucks there, and yes, we're pretty sure it was gross). In just a few hours, Rabbit lost tens of thousands in vehicles and equipment, and with it Rabbithole lost its guarantor.
The Rabbithole space, including BKC, also flooded. Though the damage was not catastrophic, still floors needed and continue to need replacing. But we made out much better than they did, and so we take it as a challenge to try to give back, to Rabbithole and its engine Rabbit Movers.
Please join us, therefore, for the Rabbithole Recovery Benefit, a silent auction with live performances from bands Monogold, CC Carana, Jason Bartell (of Fang Island), performance group Immediate Medium, and auctioned works from 31 artists, including international art star Dan Zeller and emerging artists Phillip Stearns, Pete Watts, Chrissy Lush and more! We hope to raise money to help stabilize Rabbithole and its resident organizations after hurricane losses, and for continued repairs around the space.
