Earth Day At Its Finest

“The earth is what we all have in common.” - Wendell Berry

New York might be one of the greenest cities in America seeing that we have the highest percentage of workers who commute by public transportation, bike or foot.  The city’s sustainability program PlaNYC  has helped to achieve the cleanest air in 50 years, adding 865,000 trees and five million feet of reflective rooftop to the urban landscape and has helped to reduce the carbon emissions by 19% since 2005.  Being the great city that we are, there is a bunch of events going on to celebrate Mother Earth this month too.

The 4th annual Green Festival Expo is kicking off this weekend at the Javits Center April 24 - 26th.  Over 300 exhibitors gather to offer eco-friendly services, earth-conscious products and educational demonstrations/lectures. There will also be a vast selection of vegetarian, vegan, non-GMO and organic food items available for sale.  Both educational and delicious!

If your more of an aquatic person check out the 9th annual Earth Day Rockaway on Saturday May 2nd.  All activities are free and include live music, food, kite-making, recycling olympics, mock dolphin rescue, plantings, composting, face painting, water testing, raptor demonstration,  firehouse safety obstacle course, and art-related booths to learn how better to appreciate and conserve the earth's resources.  This event had us at 'raptor demonstration.'

If you don't feel like leaving your desk then check out these photos from the Environmental Photographer Of The Year awards.  Last year there were more than 10,000 submissions!  Read more here.

Happy Earth Day everyone!!  Now get out there and do some tree hugging!
