“Connect device, if the device does not turn on, examine the connection before reconnecting.”

In our age of hyper-connectivity, the convenience of our mobile devices, the internet, and social media makes it increasingly more difficult to disconnect. According to wearesocial.com’s global digital report, there are 5.11 billion mobile users, 4.39 billion internet users, and 3.48 billion social media users in the world today. It’s estimated that last year 1 trillion images were taken. Will a single image ever garner the same weight as it used to? And how has the responsibility of an image changed over time?  The use of the words disconnect and unplug have grown in popularity--buzz words of our everyday. Technology has allowed us access to people and places all over the globe, while simultaneously distracting us from the present moment.

We depend on our devices; Google maps leads us to our destinations, Facetime keeps us in touch with family/friends, and various social media apps help amplify and shape our personal experiences. How has our online socialization affected our connections? Does the constant documentation of our lives serve a purpose beyond our own self-aggrandizing ego? Does having more information equal more connection? Will we ever be truly connected or disconnected?

In this show, we hope to visually convey the feeling of disconnect.
