To Love

"To Love", an ode to myself and the queer community of colour. From platonic to romantic to lovers to friends, to everything and all in between.

"To Love" is to find a home within ourselves and each other, to crave, build and invite intimacy and connection. Moments that otherwise would have been left unseen, comfort that is found nowhere else…this body of work carves out representation missing in the world around us, for queer people of colour to cherish the love that surrounds us.

About Gianna

Gianna Chun is a photo-based artist from Hong Kong and Singapore, working in New York and worldwide after receiving her BFA in photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). She spent the majority of her life growing up in Beijing, China, and the amalgamation of surroundings has led them to address the question “What is Home?”.

Through the lens, Gianna finds “home” through connection and intimacy. Addressing the complexity and nuances of identity, they explore the sense of belonging, relationships, intimacy, growth and change in the LGBTQ+ community. In addition to her current series “To Love”, an ode to the queer community of colour, Gianna also uses book-making and immersive installations to seek out a different kind of home: one seeped in location, culture, family history and the archive. Retracing footsteps that were supposed to be - but never were - familiar, "Neither Here Nor There" spans across the globe.

Gianna’s work has been exhibited at Art Depot 798 in Beijing, China, ObjectIfs in Singapore, as well as the Meyerhoff Gallery, Decker Library and Main 0 Gallery at MICA. Her first solo show featuring "Q&A" (a Queer Asian community photo series) opened in October 2020 in the Pinkard Gallery. Her work was also featured in Straits Times and she is the recipient of the Jan Meyer Photography Traveling Fellowship 2021.
