"It's easy to get handed information, but that's not always the best way to get it. Sometimes you have to earn it and that means searching for it for yourself. In doing so, it is that much more fulfilling..." from our NEW artist interview series: Beyond the Image featuring photographers and creators from our RELIEF MARKT guided by BKC founder Justin Lin. This clip is from an interview with celebrity portrait photographer, Jai Lennard (@jai.lennard) who shares thoughts on how we can better educate ourselves as allies in the Black Lives movement - Recorded on June 7, 2020. ⠀

JOIN US TONIGHT (Wed June 24th at 6:30pm on Zoom) for our weekly open photography forum. Today we will use Teju Cole’s article “When the Camera Was a Weapon of Imperialism. (And When It Still Is.)” as our prompt for investigating the power of images.
Anyone can listen in and/or contribute to the conversation. Find the link on @seeingcollective bio (or DM us) under The Camera is a Dangerous Tool.
Reading the article is not essential to participate in this conversation. In this forum we will discuss how photography was an important tool to enforce imperialism and how our use of “shooting” in reference to taking photos enforces the violence that photography is capable of.
Understanding that educating oneself is an initial step in creating real change, The Camera is a Dangerous Tool was created to use prompts (texts, images, videos, etc.) to launch critical conversations about the power of images.
Each week we will share a prompt to investigate photography's relationship to justice, imperialism, propaganda, visibility, sexism, violence, etc., and how we participate in and/or impede these systems.
Please recognize that these are open discussions initiated by non-experts on these topics. This forum is supported by @seeingcollective & @wearebkc
With suggestions for topics, please contact @sinabasilafoto
See you tonight!
