Sit-Spot

A Sit-Spot is the indigenous practice that is the simple act of finding a particular place in nature where you sit quietly and observe on a regular basis. By taking yourself out of your regular daily routine and reconnecting with the rhythms of the natural world, you begin to recalibrate and reconnect, strengthening not only your awareness of your environment, but your own true nature.

But what happens when access to nature is limited? What happens when a city’s concrete landscape, noise, and crowds is your natural world? How does one find their Sit-Spot in NYC?

About Alex

While I have been studying photography since high school, in college I majored in Environmental Studies because next to photography, ecological sustainability and examining the human need to connect with nature in order to personally thrive and form cohesive communities is a strong interest which often fuels much of my personal photography. I do lean towards more of a documentary style, which I believe comes from my fascination with how being behind the camera allows you to learn more about the subjects and their personal stories--which in turn I hope the observer can enter into their own dialogue. Since moving to NYC/Brooklyn this year to pursue a full-time career in photography, I have been exploring the human relationship to the city's urban landscape as well as its pockets of green space.
