Description

We think of photography as capturing an instant, but is it?

Philosophers and theorists cannot agree on a single definition of time, or indeed if such a thing exists. Wrought with its intangible nature, differences in observation and experience and mathematical impossibilities, the phenomenon of time has captivated humans for millennia.  How can we explore time through the inherently still medium of photography?

In this class, we'll investigate photography's unique ability to expand and contract time via a series of imaginative photographic exercises and assignments.  In addition to sharing the work of photographers and other artists making work about time, we'll discuss different philosophies of time, and historical ways of measuring and describing time.

Join artist Sally Bozzuto in exploring these ideas in a six-week meditation on time and how we portray it through imagery.

Who should take this class?

Photographing Time is part creative workshop and part metaphysical voyage, so we welcome all deep thinkers and curious makers.  That said, perceptions of time are critical elements to all sorts of creative endeavors, and photography is no exception.  The understanding gained through this practice can be of great benefit to photo editing, sequencing and storytelling in general.
