This course will be covering all the nuts-to-bolts aspects of exposure, shutter speeds, aperture, ISO, depth of field, motion blur, as well as comparing different lenses and the basics of composition.  Featuring weekly assignments, class critiques, and developing a final project for an end-of-class student exhibition.

Digital Photo II: Intermediate 
This course picks up where Digital Photo I leaves off, and introduces the variables of color photography, white balance, lighting and on-camera flash as well as composition review, creative color schemes, special effects and more.  Develop your skills and feed your vision.

Essential Lighting & Studio
Take your studio lighting skills further with this essential weekly package of technical training and studio lab time.  In 3 hours each week, we'll analyze some our favorite images and practice single-light setups, creative use of light modifiers, complex multiple-light setups, background lighting, mixed lighting and more.

Essential Portraiture
This six-session, challenge-based course enhances your portrait skills through understanding and maximizing natural light, continuous (hot) lights, composition, lens effects, and working with human subjects. We'll delve deep into what it means to be creative in photographic portraiture, including how to overcome equipment limitations in the DIY studio, and develop basic post-production skills to complete the job.

1 Day Workout: Camera Warm-Up!
Want to get a jump-start in photography?  This workshop is definitely for you.  In five hours we'll help you forge a friendship with your digital camera, exploring its vital features and demystifying the buttons and dials that trip common users up.  From controlling exposure to getting a handle on autofocus, we'll unpack these tech-heavy tools in a simple and straightforward manner.  Camera Warm-Up! challenges students to learn their camera's essential functions by shooting in live situations, working responsively and intuitively.  We want you to take control of the camera, and not the other way around! 1 day, 5 hours. $120.00.  Check dates

1 Day Workout: Composition Tune-Up!
Beginning with simple concepts like leading lines, 1-point perspective, frame-within-a-frame, and then breaking down the ideas that made classic works of art famous, we'll get you looking deeper at the underlying forms and structure of effective images. Then we'll take our experiments outside where you'll respond to challenges designed to spark new ideas. 1 Day Workout: Color Calisthenics
This one-day class invites you to think critically about color in your photographs.  We'll briefly overview the history of color photography, from early trials in 3-color process by Thomas Sutton to the digital pixel palettes of today's Photoshop world.  Then we'll go hands-on, making photographic stories that challenge our interpretation of color.  You'll discover what makes a great color vs black & white photograph, and become familiar with critical terms like luminance, saturation and hue.

1 Day Workout: Engaging Light!
This workshop challenges students to observe, perceive and manipulate light and shadow to help make unique photographs that inspire the imagination.  By utilizing a 5-hour class structure, we'll be able to watch and photograph sunlight change throughout the day and discuss its effects on street scenes, architecture and portrait environments.   You'll deepen your understanding of light and how it reacts to different situations--a critical training for capturing powerful imagery.  Through gaining a better appreciation for how light can shape the image, we can push our creativity to greater depths.

Crash Course: Easy Stills & Tabletop 
In this workshop, we'll show you some important techniques for shooting smaller objects without dropping thousands of dollars on high-end lighting gear. We’ll show you how to maximize just about any camera to capture clean, well-lit photographs of clothes, shoes, accessories, as well as collectible items or even electronics.

Crash Course: iPhoneography 101
We'll talk generally about color snapshot photography, including some of the masters of the medium.  Then we'll discuss our favorite apps and how they work, as well as how to tweak the iPhone's camera and software to maximize our picture-taking arsenal.  Students will experiment and upload images to create an online group gallery, exploring color, composition and the iPhone's inherent strengths and limitations.

Crash Course: Night Vision
When darkness falls, you don’t have to put your camera away and go home. In fact, some of our favorite artists have exploited the otherwordly look of night photography and so can you. In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll make fast friends with your tripod and the B (bulb) setting on your camera, pushing your idea of “available light” to its limits.

Analog Film & Darkroom

Essential Black & White Darkroom
Over 6 weeks we’ll cover basic darkroom skills, including black & white film processing, test strips, contact sheets and negative enlargement.  We’ll delve deep into more advanced techniques like contrast filtration, dodging and burning, combination printing, print toning, hand-coloring and more, with included lab hours each week.

The Analog Film Lab 
Join us for an action-packed day of analog film photography! Using traditional film cameras, we’ll shoot, develop, contact and print—walking you through the entire process of classic darkroom photography. Take home your own silver-based prints that you create from start to finish!

Crash Course: Darkroom Basics 
In three hours, we’ll show you how to take a 35mm black-and-white film negative and print it using an enlarger and traditional chemistry.  You’ll learn how to make test strips, contact prints, enlargement prints and how to properly develop, fix, wash and dry your print.

Field Guides

Field Guides

3 hours of exploring new territory, re-analyzing older terrain, using the city as set designer for your ideas.  Each Field Guide meets on location where we quickly recap some of the greatest hits (or lack thereof) of our particular meeting point.  Following the introduction are two live shooting periods, divided by a quick meetup and feedback session.  Finally we'll reconvene for an optional drink/snack and chat at a noteworthy local establishment.
