The Other Sight Of Us

In this series, I tried to capture the individuality of some of the college students in my college campus, a community that I'm a part of. The common goal of college students is to get the degree and transition to adulthood. The workload and busy schedule of the students often doesn’t leave much time to reflect on the identities of these students and what represents them. Before the students know it, they get hit by the harsh reality of the responsibilities as an adult.

The goal of this series was to show the students unique identities despite their busy schedules. It’s not just going to classes, doing assignments, taking exams and partying. The college students go through their own similarities and differences. Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of your true identity in a college environment.

Some of the students I included in this series are adapting to their new lifestyle. For example, Zaid is a first year student at the University of Rochester who came from a muslim background. He wasn’t sure how halal campus food is going to be, so he went vegetarian at the start of his time here. Besides attending classes, he prays regularly and involves himself with the Muslim Student Association on campus. On the other hand, Zero is trying to make some extra money on the side by giving haircuts on campus to support his family since his father is sick and can’t work anymore.

Throughout the series, I tried to share the stories of these students who are going above and beyond to stay true to the purposes they created for themselves. They’re not what others might describe college students. They’re rising stars.
